Student Travel Grant

Application Deadline: July 14, 2023

Student participation has long been a valued element of the GEC, and the Student Travel Grant program was established to enable a greater number of students to attend by defraying associated expenses. Travel Grant nominations are encouraged for students attending the 2023 GEC to make an oral or poster presentation of their research. Awards will include the full cost of conference registration and partial coverage for lodging. Recipients will be selected from the pool of nominated students by the GEC Scholarship committee, and because funds are limited, we request that no more than one nomination be submitted per research group.

Application procedure:

The application package must include:

  • A letter of support from the student’s advisor. The nomination letter should address the following factors to be considered by the selection committee:
    1. the advisor’s assessment of the student, including research progress and the benefits to be gained by GEC attendance,
    2. statement of financial need (i.e., would this grant enable attendance for additional students beyond student travel included in research grant budgets), and
    3. how the student’s participation will contribute to diversity at the GEC.
  • A copy of the student’s GEC 2023 submitted abstract in PDF format

Please note:

  1. A nomination for a travel grant is separate from all other award nominations.
  2. To attain the full benefit of the GEC conference experience, recipients of the travel grant are expected to attend the entire conference.
  3. Recipients would be encouraged to consider volunteering for a couple of hours throughout the week (not a condition of acceptance).

The application materials must be submitted through the online portal by noon US Central Time (5 pm GMT) on July 14, 2023.

Please address any questions to the Student Travel Grant Coordinator, John Foster - JEFOSTER@umich.edu – local organizing committee member.

Child Care Grants

Application Deadline: August 25, 2023

Applications are invited for grants to facilitate access to the APS-GEC meeting in October. Grants of up to $400 per individual or family will be available to assist GEC registrants who bring young children to the meeting or who incur extra expense in leaving dependents at home (i.e., daycare, babysitting, or caregiver services), or who need to fund additional activities or services to address accessibility issues.

Application procedure:

The application package must include the following in a typed document:

  • Name and affiliation of the applicant
  • Stage of career
  • A credible estimate of the expected expenses.

The final expenses must be documented by receipts. If the number of requests exceeds the funding available, we will give preference to applicants in the early stages of their careers, especially postdocs and graduate students.

The reimbursement can also cover travel expenses (car or public transportation) or other costs to be considered, but does not cover meals. Receipts must be received by TBD. Copies of actual receipts must be submitted.

Please submit nominations or any questions to the GEC Child Care Organizer, Peng Zhang - pz@egr.msu.edu – local organizing committee member.
