2025 GEC Early Career Award Recipient

Dr. Sanghoo Park (KAIST, Republic of Korea)

The GEC Early Career Award Committee is pleased to recognize Dr. Sanghoo Park, Associate Professor at KAIST, South Korea, as the recipient of the 2025 Early Career Award.

Dr. Park has made exceptional contributions to low-temperature plasma science through his innovative work in plasma diagnostics, plasma–liquid interactions, and interdisciplinary applications.

Dr. Park is widely known for his groundbreaking studies on electrohydrodynamic (EHD) stabilization of liquid surfaces by plasma jets (Nature, 2021), and the generation of electric wind (Nature Communications, 2018). His work bridges fundamental plasma physics and real-world applications, such as plasma-assisted food processing and chemical engineering. Notably, he developed continuum-based electron diagnostics, optical emission tomography, and image-based spectral analysis using deep learning, significantly advancing plasma monitoring techniques. His research impacts both academia and industry, with collaborations involving semiconductor and display companies. Dr. Park is also an active contributor to the GEC community, having presented at multiple annual meetings since 2014 and serving on the local organizing committee for GEC 2025.

His scientific originality, technical rigor, and community engagement make Dr. Park a highly deserving recipient of the 2025 GEC Early Career Award.

We extend our sincere congratulations.

2025 GEC Early Career Award Selection Committee.

GEC Student Award for Excellence

To encourage and recognize the important contributions students make to the Gaseous Electronics Conference, specifically, and to the plasma/atomic-molecular optical science fields, in general, the GEC Executive Committee will recognize one (1) student presenter with the GEC Student Award for Excellence. Finalists will be announced on the meeting website before the meeting and will present their work at the conference. The student award recipient will be announced during the banquet. The award consists of cash ($1,000 USD) and a certificate.

To be eligible for the award, the student must present a contributed talk (not a poster) and must be a current student or have defended their thesis no earlier than April 30, 2025. The application materials must be submitted by the advisor as a single PDF file before the application deadline. No more than one student may be nominated per advisor.

The application should contain:

  • a copy of the student's abstract
  • a one-page cover letter from the student including, among other aspects, a description of the motivation for doing the research, the relevance of the work to plasma/atomic-molecular optical science, a list of all collaborators on the project, and the scope of the student's contribution to the project
  • a two-page-maximum curriculum vitae of the student (including educational background, research experience, professional affiliations, publications, patents, presentations, and awards)
  • a one-page nomination letter from the supervisor including, among other aspects, the student's creative contribution to the project, the duration of the student's participation in the project, and unique project-related qualifications of the student

The application materials must be submitted through the online portal by noon US Central Time (5 pm GMT) on June 9th, 2025.

Questions can be directed to Ana Sobota - a.sobota@tue.nl – head of the Student Award for Excellence Committee.

The GEC Student Awards Committee will review the nominations and select the finalists for the Student Award for Excellence. Members of the GEC Student Awards Committee will also serve as judges. Judges will attend the finalists' oral presentations and select the award recipient.

Application Deadline: June 9, 2025

GEC Student-Poster Prizes

Three student posters will be selected by the GEC Executive Committee and recognized during the banquet. The GEC gratefully acknowledges the important contributions students make to GEC.
Undergraduate students are also encouraged to participate.

To be eligible for the award:

  • the student must present a poster as first author
  • register for the poster judging before the application deadline

More than one student from the same advisor may apply. At most one student per advisor will be awarded this Poster Prize.

The student application should contain:
