Awards and Poster Prizes

GEC Student Award for Excellence

To encourage and recognize the important contributions students make to the Gaseous Electronics Conference, specifically, and to the plasma/atomic-molecular optical science fields, in general, the GEC Executive Committee will recognize one (1) student presenter with the GEC Student Award for Excellence. Finalists will be announced on the meeting website before the meeting and will present their work at the conference. The student award recipient will be announced during the banquet. The award consists of cash ($1,000 USD) and a certificate.

To be eligible for the award, the student must present a contributed talk (not a poster) and must be a current student or have defended their thesis no earlier than April 30, 2024. The application materials must be submitted by the advisor as a single PDF file before the application deadline. No more than one student may be nominated per advisor.

The application should contain:

  • a copy of the student's abstract
  • a one-page cover letter from the student including, among other aspects, a description of the motivation for doing the research, the relevance of the work to plasma/atomic-molecular optical science, a list of all collaborators on the project, and the scope of the student's contribution to the project
  • a two-page-maximum curriculum vitae of the student (including educational background, research experience, professional affiliations, publications, patents, presentations, and awards)
  • a one-page nomination letter from the supervisor including, among other aspects, the student's creative contribution to the project, the duration of the student's participation in the project, and unique project-related qualifications of the student

The application materials must be submitted through the online portal by noon US Central Time (5 pm GMT) on June 3rd, 2024.

The GEC Student Awards Committee will review the nominations and select the finalists for the Student Award for Excellence. Members of the GEC Student Awards Committee will also serve as judges. Judges will attend the finalists' oral presentations and select the award recipient.

GEC Student-Poster Prizes

Three student posters will be selected by the GEC Executive Committee and recognized during the banquet. The GEC gratefully acknowledges the important contributions students make to GEC.
Undergraduate students are also encouraged to participate.

To be eligible for the award:

  • the student must present a poster as first author
  • register for the poster judging before the application deadline

More than one student from the same advisor may apply. At most one student per advisor will be awarded this Poster Prize.

The student application should contain:

  • Name and email address of student
  • Title of the poster presentation
  • The name of the advisor

Student applications are to be submitted to this Google drive application form (Google account is needed) by noon US Central Time (5 pm GMT) on September 20th, 2024.
